EU disallows Denmark's 2030 ban on fossil car sales

The country's announced ban on sales of gasoline and diesel cars would be in violation of EU laws in the area.

It will not be possible for Denmark to ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars from 2030, a stated aim of both the country's previous and current governments, writes Danish newspaper Berlingske based on a letter dated Dec. 18, 2018, from Polish EU Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska to the Danish parliament's European Affairs Committee.

"... under current Union type-approval legislation, a complete ban of the marketing, import or registration of new petrol and diesel cars in a Member State is not compatible with EU law," Bienkowska writes to the committee.
